About This Quote

I remember asking a wise man once . . . "Why do Men fear the dark?" .

. . "Because darkness" he told me, "is ignorance made visable." "And do Men despise ignorance?" I asked.

"No," he said, "they prize it above all things--all things!--but only so long as it remains invisible." As humans, we want to be seen. We want to be acknowledged for our talents, skills and successes. We like to be praised for our expertise in various areas of life.

If we can see ourselves, we feel more confident in ourselves and others will see us in the same way. We like to receive recognition for our good deeds and positive contributions. When someone is seen, they can't hide or remain unseen.

So when darkness shrouds the world, the people become afraid. They are afraid because they don't understand what is happening around them at that moment. They are afraid because they don't know if their lives are still safe or not.

They don't know what potential dangers may lurk around the corner in the dark of night or in the shadows of a night-time alleyway or behind the dimly-lit windows of an unkempt building with ragged shingles and broken windowsills. So when darkness covers them up, they don't move or act with any purpose or sense of urgency even when there is danger. This quote shows how important it is to keep your eyes out in order to avoid danger when it comes your way at night time especially when you are alone.
